Temirkhan Dosmukhambetov
Minister of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), a specialised United Nations institution for tourism, I am happy to welcome all exhibitors, guests and organisers of the 7th Kazakhstan Tourism Exhibition, AstanaLeisure 2010, hosted in Astana, the beautiful and modern capital of Kazakhstan.

This annual event in the world of tourism is a vivid example of the growing tourist industry in Kazakhstan and of the special attention paid to tourism by the country’s government, which wisely recognises the undisputed economic and social benefits and advantages resulting from tourism.

Last year’s AstanaLeisure was arranged to coincide with the 18th session of the UNWTO General Assembly, held at the high level in the national capital of Kazakhstan. This year, the tourism exhibition is to be held on the eve of the 2011 Winter Asian Games. Event tourism is known to be one of the most powerful catalysts to bring in a good deal of tourist resources.

In this respect, I would like to mention that such specialised tourism events as AstanaLeisure are well-timed and important for enhancing the tourism capacity of Kazakhstan aimed to welcome foreign guests during the 2011 Winter Asian Games. The Games will allow them to learn about unique tourism opportunities of Kazakhstan, the country which possesses a huge tourism capacity due to its location in the heart of Eurasia, a vast and versatile area, a rich cultural and historic heritage, traditions and the celebrated hospitality of its people.

After 2009 – one of the worst periods in the tourism history – our sector begins to recover and grow thus proving again its amazing ability for revival. A lot of countries set new records in international tourism arrivals, leaving the losses of 2009 far behind and surpassing the 2008 performance indicators.

Therefore, the improving economic situation in the world, tourism recovery and growth, the rich tourism capacity of the country, and a wise approach of the government to the use of this potential – all these factors guarantee a successful development of tourism and prosperity in Kazakhstan.

May AstanaLeisure 2010 become a constructive place to discuss important issues on the eve of the 2011 Winter Asian Games and to make good decisions on effective management of tourist flows during this world-level event!

May all exhibitors and guests enjoy a successful and constructive work!
